How much can you pack into a weekend?

September 15, 2008

I am enjoying the peace of having the three boys back at school, Olivia napping, and Sarah quietly playing by herself. We had a very busy weekend. On top of having a full house each night, the kids & I spent Saturday morning at the Walk for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. One of the boys in Alex’s class has Juvenile Diabetes so we walked on his team. We ended up at the Park, where the mayor was barbequing hotdogs and they were drawing for prizes. Alex won a gift certificate for the Irving Big Stop Restaurant, and I won a hair & nail package from a local spa. Sarah was most impressed with the nail polish in the package, so we both have beautifully painted, shiny red tonails!

We came home from the walk and proceeded to ice a 65th birthday cake for my mother. We had baked it between breakfast and the walk. I had tried to make a lemon flavored cake & icing because I find that I can always taste the palm oil shortening we have to use, and I don’t like it! It would be great if Olivia would outgrow her dairy allergy so we could use butter again! We rushed around getting the cleanup done and to get ready for Ginna’s birthday party. Our old babysitter, Sarah, arrived with her new husband to house-sit for us while we drove to Uncle Jon’s restaurant, The Olive Branch, for supper.

We had such a great time with Ginna & Beanah, Uncle Jon, the six of us & Auntie Ruth & Uncle Dick.  Olivia refused to keep her shirt on, but other than that, we were fairly well behaved.  Jonathan made sure that they did not cook any peanut-butter cheesecake that day and didn’t serve any while we were there.  Olivia made out fine, but did throw up all over me in the car just as we were heading out of Sackville.  She was fine after that, but it made a long drive home for me since I didn’t think to take a change of clothes for myself!

Yesterday, we divided & conqured when it came to church.  It was the first day of Sunday School at the United Church.  I teach the 3 & 4 year olds two weeks a month, so the kids & I all went there while D’Arcy went to the Catholic Church since it was his week to serve Communion there.  We also had Communion at the United Church, so I had sent in our own safe bread & some apple juice and the minister made sure Olivia got her own which was safe without making a big fuss about it.  I had never thought about things like not being able to take Communion until it came up at a meeting last week!  Luckily, we’re surrounded by people who care enough about her that we don’t have to keep her living in a bubble.

We went to Ginna & Beanah’s for lunch (corn-on-the-cob) since it was her actual birthday, but it was a bit of a rush since we had to get home and finish cleaning up the rooms and I had to run out to a Bridal Shower for 2:00.  We had just gotten in the door when the doorbell rang (1:45).  D’Arcy told him that the room wasn’t ready so he went for a walk.  Luckily, he was very nice and said he realized that check-in wasn’t until 3:00!  At the same time, Olivia started throwing up!  She’s been doing that a lot lately!  I got her cleaned up and settled down for a nap and ran out to the Shower – late – leaving D’Arcy with the mess.  (He’s a good man!)

I snuck out of the Shower at 3:30, after the gifts were opened (Sarah got some beautiful things!) and when I got home, there was STILL cleanup to be done!  Long story short, we got the breakfast dishes finished and the last load of laundry in at about 5:30!  What a day!

The guests were all in before supper and some were hanging out on the deck drinking wine.  The girls were suffering from major party hangover, so we got them fed and shuffled into bed as early as possible – Sarah shortly after six & Olivia by seven!  D’Arcy took the boys up and read some Encyclopedia Brown with them, and then we both sat down to do some homework.  He had marking to do, and I have a bunch of documents to go over before my tourism Board meeting on Wednesday.

I really don’t think we could have fit much more into this weekend.  We also had homemade pizza night, went shopping, went searching for (and found!) a lost hubcap, mowed the lawn, and did some baking.

Here are some photos from Ginna’s party:
