Celebrating life in a variety of ways

October 3, 2008

This week has been very much about celebrating life in our household. My father turned 70 on Wednesday. This seems to be a huge milestone for him, as I’m sure it is for most people. My father-in-law, who is 82, told me to let him know to enjoy the 70’s as they go a lot faster than the 60’s! We went to my parents’ house where my mother had cooked a tasty dinner that everyone enjoyed, the kids got to zip on the zip-line and we had a fun, relaxing visit.

Yesterday, we drove into the city for D’Arcy’s cousin’s funeral Mass. Anne was 48 and had lived with Multiple Sclerosis for the past 31 years. She attended our wedding in November 1997, and then was admitted to a nursing home the following Monday. That family has had more than their fair share of hardships: their mother also died of MS in her 40’s, their father (D’Arcy’s uncle) died on the operating table during routine surgery, their brother died at age 12 when he fell out of a tree, and their oldest brother (52) is now using a walker because his MS has progressed. Every single time I saw Anne, she had a huge smile on her face and such a cheerful disposition. The size of her funeral (it was packed) is surely a testament to the kind of person she was and how much she will be missed by the family & friends who loved her.

We had one of the best family visits that we’ve had in a long time, after the Mass. (Probably because there were no kids running around!) Our nephew Michael was there with his wife Emily. They have recently moved back from Ontario and this was the first time we’d seen them since their wedding last summer. Emily is due to have the first great-grandchild on October 10th. I remember so well how uncomfortable those last few days are! She’s huge and swollen, but still beautiful! I know she’s anxious to have the baby, so I put my guess in for October 5th in the baby pool. We are waiting with eager anticipation to hear the news of a healthy delivery sooner rather than later!

In the meantime, here are a few photos from Beanah’s 70th birthday party:

Sure love birthday cake!
