Floor update & more

March 21, 2009

Before I forget, here is a photo of D’Arcy, Colin & Nick moving the piano.  As I mentioned before, I forgot to get the camera out until they were almost finished. I would have liked to have gotten some of the previous dialogue captured…

I got behind yesterday and didn’t post.  D’Arcy got up and finished sanding as soon as Fernando was done breakfast.  He was able to return the machines early and pick up the varnish so that we could get the kids fed their lunches shortly after eleven and head out to Halifax by noon.  We stopped at the CBC to pick up Alex’s prize from Monday – a family pass to the Museum of Natural History and Frisbee.  We got to the museum around one and managed to score a parking meter right out front!

I can’t tell you how liberating it felt to be traveling with only an umbrella stroller (just in case!).  After ten years, I’m so used to packing the double stroller, the booster seat, and a big diaper bag…

We had a lot of fun at the museum.  I let Olivia out of the stroller and she was enthralled by all the exhibits!

It was so much fun to watch the wonder in her face!

We came home and because everyone slept in the van, we had a terrible time getting everyone to go to sleep!  D’Arcy ended up wiping down walls until almost two while I stayed upstairs trying to get little people settled.  It was 12:30 before Olivia finally gave up and went to sleep!  (I know I was dozing long before that!)

This morning, after 33 nights, was Fernando’s last breakfast with us.  The kids were beside themselves telling him stories.  We think he’ll be back for at least the month of April, but he’s going to let us know after he talks to his boss…

I cleaned all the glass while D’Arcy prepped the floors.  After one final wipe with a tacky cloth, the varnishing began.   We chose a clear, satin-finish varnish, hoping that it will not show marks as much as a gloss would.

So now D’Arcy is just about finished the third coat, and “we’ll” do the fourth (and maybe a fifth!) tomorrow.  Then the plan is to let it cure until Thursday night before we move the furniture back in.  In that time without guests, I hope to Spring Clean as much of the guest areas (and our areas!) as possible.  We’ll re-open the B&B Friday night.

Tomorrow we’ll be in full-swing back-to-school mode: cooking, cleaning & getting to bed early…
