Would you give a discount?

June 25, 2009

We had a woman call yesterday afternoon to ask if we had a room available.  We did and told her the rate.  She then proceeded to explain that she wouldn’t be arriving until 10:30pm, so would we give her a discount because she wouldn’t be using the room very long?

I made sure the lights were turned off by 10:00.

Hello! I am an Assistant Manager of a B&B in Stillwater, MN. I wouldn’t have given the woman a discount either. It is crazy how many people have called and asked us the same question. We even had a man call and say that he and his wife couldn’t stay over night, but they would love to rent the room for 3 hours if we gave them a discount. Of course I said no. Honestly, I don’t know what they were thinking, or what this woman was thinking either. Everyone is just looking for a discount! (:

    • Glad to hear it’s not just here!! Tonight we had a call asking if we would skip the tax if they paid cash. Sigh. I said no, unfortunately, I’m a former Canada Revenue Agency Employee (true!). To make matters worse, when they got here they asked my husband if we would absorb the tax if they stayed another night. Luckily, the room is filled tomorrow… I don’t want to sound ungrateful for the business, but I value the services we provide!! Some B&B’s are willing to do this and it sets a bad precedent for the rest of us who are honest! (Stepping off my soapbox now…)
      Best of luck this season!!!
