My parents have a pool and we are all so vigilant about the kids’ safety around water.  We have an extra hook on both the back door and the screen door, and the pool is fenced in.  Our mantra with the children, pretty much since birth, has been, “you are not allowed in the backyard without an adult” – to the point where when they were little, the boys would wait for an adult to go into the backyard in the winter when the pool was frozen!  However, there have been two incidents – where the adults have been talking on the deck – and a child (not necessarily ours) has fallen into the water and been in distress.  Luckily, someone was there and watching, and these incidents had happy endings.  I encourage everyone – whether you have children or not – to read the following article, especially if you live near water of any kind.  You never know – heaven forbid – when it might be useful!

Drowning Doesn’t Look Like Drowning
